The A-1 Skyraider, developed late in WWII as a carrier-based torpedo/dive bomber, entered service too late for the war but quickly proved its worth. Renowned for its heavy payload capacity—fourteen wing hardpoints—and excellent low-speed maneuverability, it could loiter longer and deliver ordnance with precision. These traits made it invaluable in Korea and later in Vietnam.
The Douglas AD-5 variant (redesignated A-1E in 1962) was a two-seat antisubmarine aircraft with a widened fuselage, folding wings, and room for two mission specialists.
Though gradually replaced by the A-6 Intruder, the Skyraider remained in demand, notably with the USAF’s Air Rescue and Recovery Service, providing close air support and protecting downed pilots until rescue. Its durability and accuracy saved countless lives, and two USAF pilots earned the Medal of Honor flying it.
